Jester the Giraffe—My First Children's Book! ISO Publishing Advice and Beta Readers!

Updated: Aug 13

Jester the Giraffe

I am excited to say, that I have completed my first children's book in a mere day! Yes, that's right, I started and finished Jester the Giraffe yesterday, August 12, 2024! Of course, the story was already written, in my head, as it is a bedtime story that I made up for my boys when they were little tikes. Ah yes, Jester the Giraffe, kind of an oddball, though that is not the theme of this first book. You see, all the other characters in the story have names that begin with the first letter of whatever animal they are. For example: Leo the Lion, Mike the Monkey, Zip the Zebra, and so on.

Right now, the book is in PowerPoint (.pptx) and MP4 (mp4) formats. I wrote the story and OpenArt did a spectacular job with the illustrations, on this, my first children's book! If I ever get Jester published, they will be hearing from me.

Seeking Publishing Advice and Beta Readers

As I am new to all of this, I'm seeking advice on publishing, and would appreciate any feedback on KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing). From what I understand it's free, but this old goat knows that nothing is free. I'm not in it for the money, but I would like to get some printed copies for myself, friends, and family, and I would ask the local school district if I might donate some copies to the elementary schools, as there are some good morals to learn from this story.

With that said, I am also seeking beta readers to go over Jester the Giraffe. Not so much for spelling and grammar, as it is written for early elementary-age children, but to edit for content. Regrettably, while I may spin a good yarn, navigating the waters of "social sensitivity" isn't my strong suit. Don't get me wrong, I have no ill intentions toward anyone, I'm not racist, sexist, or any of those other ist's, except for conspiracy theorist, or narcissist... Wait, never mind, I digress. I just know that sometimes I say things and people look at me like, "Did you really just say that?" And I say, "Say what?" And, now I can't think of an example, but I also think, my wife says I'm crazy, that I may have ADHD or the opposite, or slightly autistic, and I know I have OCD, but you know what? I'm fifty and doing just fine. So what if I bag groceries for a paycheck. I'm happy and I'm writing, and I can't complain. Well...

Oh, and that thing about not being in it for the money... Well, hell yeah I'm in it for the money! Who wouldn't want the lifestyle of a rich and famous writer? But seriously folks, I'm not quitting my day job, and I know, success is just one reader away! God bless!

And btw, don't you worry, I don't say "hell" in Jester the Giraffe.
